Whichever way you look at it, the world is a funny old place right now. The last couple of years have been pretty crazy, as a look at the news will tell you. That’s why it might be more important than ever to be conscientious and mindful about our own lives, making sure we are moving in the right direction and keeping on top of the things that make us happy and feel good about our place in the world.
It’s all too easy to make vague promises and resolutions at this time of year, but in my experience, making meaningful change is easier when you make realistic goals about the year ahead, and simple, logical plans you can stick to that will help you to consider the things that really matter.
Here are my top tips for making 2018 your best year yet:
Take some time over the festive season to be thankful for the good things in life. Look around you and give yourself a pat on the back for the things you are proud of. Whether it’s family, personal relationships or professional achievements, take stock of what has gone well over the last twelve months and think about ways you can maintain or even better them!
Have a clear-out.
I’m not talking about your kitchen cupboards. As you consider the things that have made you feel all warm and fuzzy this year, think about the negatives too. Are there any habits or even people that haven’t helped you be your best self? Is there anything you’d like to edit out and do or see less of in 2018?
Don’t be afraid to be a bit brutal, and be totally honest with yourself. All of us have things that fill us with dread, and it’s ok to just say no or at least try to change our habits. Which brings us on to…
Ten minute marvels.
Instead of promising yourself to do a punishing workout four days a week, or becoming a Michelin starred vegan chef next year, why not take it easy on yourself? Experts say the easiest habits to stick to are the ones that require around ten minutes a day.
Maybe a ten-minute meditation would help you stay calm throughout the day, or spending ten minutes making a healthy breakfast or a walk in the park. Maybe an extra ten minutes reading before bed will make you feel more satisfied with your day, or enjoying a ten minute relaxing skincare ritual?
Whatever is your thing, make an effort to spend ten minutes a day on something you know is really good for you.
Choose mindful habits.
There are so many simple, easy things we can do to bring good, healthy habits into our lives. Why not stock up on some really good basic ingredients for your kitchen so you’ve always got some creative inspiration for those tired winter evening meals this winter? Swap your netflix membership for something more inspiring, or invest in some essential oils you can use when you need some aromatherapeutic wonders.
Skincare is my passion, and I always recommend going natural and investing in really good all natural products for your bathroom. Having things handy that make you feel (and look) great helps make keeping the promises we make to ourselves easier.
Don’t be vague.
Be honest with yourself about who you are and what you want. Over-reaching, vague goals like “having a beach body” or “building my own business” are all well and good. But making meaningful changes personally or professionally can be hard, and scary. Fear of failure can be debilitating, and stop us from taking risks or trying new things, so be clear with yourself. Ask yourself what things are going to truly make you happy and go for it. 2018 should be the year when you re-evaluate and address the things you love and hate about life, and take concrete steps to remedy or enhance them.
Having a vision for your life can sound ambitious, but knowing and accepting yourself can help you to live in the moment and strive towards a more fulfilled life.
There are a lot of things we don’t know about 2018, but taking control of our own little bits of the world is easier than you might think. Take some time to reflect on life, and make sure you are doing everything you can to make 2018 your best year ever!
